Portrait Magazine Covers

Each one of these photos are standard portrait magazine cover pictures that have been taken by professional photographers, more than likely professional portrait photographers.  A portrait picture usually tends to just be a picture of the face in the centre of the picture, the main concentration is the face/head, nothing else.  I would like to do a shoot like this because of how the whole thing looks and i think it would look better and i could make it interesting if i did a shoot of something like this.

Cindy Sherman

The two pictures above are just some examples of Cindy Shermans work which she has taken over the past, both of them are portrait pictures, also not something you would see everyday. You could say she's very different from a lot of other photographers with the way she presents her work and how she takes her pictures.
Cindy Sherman was born as Cynthia Morris Sherman, she is a famous portrait photographer.
Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, she's best known for her portraits. Through a number of different series of works. Her photographs include some of the most expensive photographs ever sold. Cindy Sherman lives and works in New York.

Fashion Magazine Covers

Each one of these magazine covers are similar in many ways as they are all clearly fashion magazine covers. Each one is really well represented, all their make up is done professionally, they have been posed professionally and their clothes have been picked out for them.  Each one of these magazine covers needs to be perfectly layer out and positioned, this is very important for a fashion magazine cover as its supposed to catch peoples eyes and make them interested.
I would like to shoot a photograph like this and make it as interesting as each one of these are, as i like the set out and the way these are designed, having being inspired by names like Vogue.

Mario Testino was born as Mario Eduardo Testino Silva on the 30th of October, 1954 (aged 60).

Mario Testino is a very famous fashion photographer who is very well known around the fashion buisness. Testino has shot fashion stories for Vogue, Gucci and Vanity Fair. Celebrity subjects have most famously included Diana, Princess of Wales and her sons. Also more recently Prince William and Catherine Middleton on the occasion of their engagement in December 2010.

Health and Safety in the studio

Health & Safety in the studio is very important. To stop any accidents from happening to yourself and anyone else around you. You must -

  • Make sure there are no loose cables, using hazard tape or duct tape secure all loose cables to stop them from becoming a tripping hazard.

  • When setting up the studio lights take sure that all tripod stands have the single leg in line with the light fitting and the other 2 legs at the back, this stops the stands tipping.

  • Also make sure to there is enough room for you and everyone else around you to move around in the studio making sure that all light stands are positioned correctly for the finished effect.

  • When changing things like a soft box to a shoot, you need to be careful as they can turn very hot and can burn.

  • If you move to a different place always put the protective cover back onto the light, this stops damage to the bulbs and burns.

  • Never leave the studio unattended with no one in it

Slow shutter speed

Both of these photos have been taken with slow shutter speed which gives off an unusual effect on the photo its self.
Shutter speed is measured in seconds, mostly in fractions of seconds.

This waterfall has obviously been taken with quite a slow shutter speed because of how much of a 'blur' effect is on the water and all the splashing of the water coming off it, which almost looks like smoke. This shows that it has been slowed down quite a lot to capture the 'blur' effect which a lot of people do when taking photos of waterfalls to look like this one.

This photo also has obviously been taken in a very slow shutter speed, as in the photo you can see that because the bridge is a still object it is completely clear as is all the water because there is no movement in there either. As for the sky, the clouds are moving constantly so the majority of them also have the 'blur' effect. The blur starts from where the clouds was when he first took the photo and because of the slow shutter speed the camera has caught them moving across the sky to make the photo have the same unusual effect and make it look more interesting.

Fast shutter speed

This photo has been taken with fast shutter speed, which leaves a very detailed effect on the photo of the bubble.  You can tell this has been taken with fast shutter speed because when the girl has gone to touch the bubble to pop it, as soon as her finger has hit it the photographer has captured it in a split second. Therefore the photo shows us half of the bubble just looks normal because all of it hasn't popped yet but the first half which her finger is touching you can see every last bit of detail, every bit of movement which happens as she pops the bubble with her finger. Obviously people use this effect to catch every single bit of movement in detail for a fast moving scene.

This photo also has been taken with fast shutter speed, which would be a good idea if wanting to capture a fast moving animal.    This animal is obviously running at a very high speed, in this picture the background is all blurred and all the focus is on the animal. The fast shutter speed has abled the photographer to catch the animal in movement without a single bit of blur on the focus of the picture.

Shallow depth of field

Shallow depth of field is when your only focusing on one thing in the picture usually up close to the front of the photo. The object or person you are concentrating and focusing on will be in focus at the front and everything else will have a 'blur' effect on it.

Deep depth of field

Large depth of field is when the background is more concentrated than the up closer to the camera view. With this photo you can see that round the sides and across the bottom has got the 'blur' effect on it where as behind that all the background is focused and concentrated on so is more clear for you to see.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Studio Photography

Advantages -

  • The advantages of working in the studio is that you will be working inside so anything that might affect you taking pictures outside, things like weather and light etc.. will not affect you in the studio, you can control all that all that your self and make the changes you need. For example, you might need the lighting to be really bright on your photo so in the studio you could do that, you could make them changes where as if you was taking the picture outside you'd have to work with whatever the weather was like as it might be raining and a really dull day you wouldn't get the finished look you wanted.

Disadvantages -

  • The disadvantages of working in the studio is that you would have to bring objects in your self of prepare it in the studio where as if you was outside you could walk around and find different types of things to take pictures of in different ways and shapes.
  • You might want a more 'natural' look to your photo which you couldn't get in the studio
  • You are limited to just simple black and white in the studio
  • There is a limited space that you have if you are working in the studio
  • Say if you wanted to chuck water around for the finished look on your picture you couldn't do that because of all the electrical equipment in the studio, there is a lot of things that could easily get broke.
